Inside every tooth lies the pulp – a tissue made up of nerve fibres, blood vessels and connective tissue.

Deep decay, cracks, injuries or other causes can lead this tissue to become inflamed or die off. Bacteria can then travel through the root canal system all the way to the area around the root tip.

The aim of a root canal treatment is to clean and disinfect this infected canal system and then seal it as tightly as possible.

A complex canal system

The inside of a tooth root is not simply a straight tube.

Root canals can be curved, branch off and have fine anatomical side canals.

The treatment therefore demands precise work and the best possible control over the length and course of the canals.

Step 1 – Access

Once the tooth has been numbed, an opening is created to reach the inside of the tooth.

Inflamed or dead tissue is removed.

Step 2 – Shaping and disinfection

The root canals are systematically shaped with fine instruments.

At the same time, irrigation solutions are used to reduce microorganisms and tissue remnants even in areas that are difficult to reach mechanically.

Step 3 – Root filling

After cleaning and shaping, the canal system is filled and sealed.

With warm vertical obturation, thermoplastically heated root filling material is used to fill the prepared canal system in three dimensions.

Step 4 – The tooth needs its stability back

A successful root canal treatment on its own is not always enough.

Depending on how much natural tooth structure has been lost, the tooth then needs to be rebuilt in a stable way – for example with an adhesive restoration, a partial crown or a crown.
