Who it is for

Teeth cleaning is for everyone. It is especially important if …

Three situations where home care alone is not enough and visits should be closer together.

  • you have implants, crowns, bridges or braces
  • your gums bleed, recede or have been treated for periodontitis
  • you want to get rid of stains from coffee, tea, red wine or nicotine

01
The concept

Guided Biofilm Therapy: eight steps, always in the same order.

GBT is a standardised protocol by the Swiss manufacturer EMS. The biofilm, the soft bacterial plaque that causes caries and periodontitis, is first made visible and then removed precisely. Scraping with hand instruments comes last, and only where it is needed.

Phase 1

Understand

GBT step 01: Assessment
01Assessment

Mouth rinse, then examination: teeth, gums, implants and dentures. We check bleeding and pocket depths so the cleaning fits your findings.

GBT step 02: Disclosing
02Disclosing

A dye makes the biofilm visible. You see for yourself where plaque sits, and we know exactly where to clean, even in hard-to-reach places.

Phase 2

Motivate

GBT step 03: Motivation
03Motivation

We show you on your own teeth which spots you miss at home and which tools really help there: interdental brushes, floss, toothbrush.

Phase 3

Clean

GBT step 04: AIRFLOW® MAX
04AIRFLOW® MAX

Warm water, air and fine erythritol powder remove biofilm, stains and early tartar, above and up to 4 mm below the gum line. Also from gums, tongue, implants and braces.

GBT step 05: PERIOFLOW® MAX
05PERIOFLOW® MAX

A thin nozzle cleans deeper gum pockets from 4 to 9 mm and implant surfaces, gently and without damaging the surface.

GBT step 06: PIEZON® PS
06PIEZON® PS

Only where hard tartar remains afterwards do we use the minimally invasive ultrasonic instrument. It adapts its power to the type of tartar.

Phase 4

Check

GBT step 07: Quality check
07Quality check

We check every surface for residue, apply fluoride if needed and discuss the result with you. Polishing is no longer necessary.

GBT step 08: Recall
08Recall

Together we decide when the next visit makes sense: every three, four or six months depending on your risk.

The device

The latest generation: the GBT Machine® by EMS.

We clean with the current prophylaxis system by the Swiss manufacturer EMS, the successor of the AIRFLOW® Prophylaxis Master. It combines AIRFLOW® MAX, PERIOFLOW® MAX and PIEZON® in one device, recognises the handpiece automatically and is tuned to the GBT protocol: no swapping, less time, less contact.

The powder is called AIRFLOW® PLUS. It is made of erythritol, a sugar substitute, is as fine as icing sugar, tastes neutral and dissolves completely in water. It is approved for children as well as for implant and periodontitis patients.

14 µmGrain size of the AIRFLOW® PLUS powder. So fine that it does not roughen enamel, gums, implants or ceramics.
warmThe water is heated in the device and the temperature is adjustable. No cold pain like with older air-polishing devices.
4 – 9 mmHow deep the PERIOFLOW® nozzle cleans in gum pockets and around implants. The AIRFLOW® itself up to 4 mm.
3 × quieterAccording to the manufacturer, the laminar jet of the AIRFLOW® MAX is much quieter and produces less spray mist than its predecessors.
What studies show
85 %

less pain than ultrasonic cleaning with rubber-cup polishing, 73 % of patients preferred the erythritol method. Mensi et al. 2022, Int J Dent Hyg.

equally effective

as classic cleaning with hand instruments, with shorter treatment time and better patient ratings. Vouros et al. 2022, Int J Dent Hyg.

gentler

on fillings, ceramics and implant surfaces: the fine powder does not roughen them, unlike polishing paste and hand instruments. Reinhart 2022, PLOS ONE.

In clinical outcomes GBT is not superior to classic teeth cleaning, but equivalent. The difference lies in comfort, time and gentleness. We say it this way because that is what the studies support.

Costs & insurance

Does my health insurer cover the costs?

Almost always at least part of them. Here you can see what your insurer pays and how you get the money back.

Professional teeth cleaning is not a standard benefit of German statutory health insurance. It is billed privately under the dental fee schedule (GOZ). Nevertheless, around nine out of ten statutory insurers now contribute as a voluntary extra benefit, many with a fixed amount per year, some covering the whole treatment.

With us it always works the same way: you pay the invoice at the practice, submit it to your insurer (via app, online or by post) and the contribution is refunded to your account. For insurers with direct billing we deduct the contribution directly, and we tell you beforehand.

Privately insured patients and those with supplementary dental insurance submit the invoice as usual. Most supplementary dental plans refund 80 to 100 percent of the cleaning.

How often

How often is teeth cleaning worthwhile?

There is no interval that suits everyone. Your risk of caries and periodontitis decides. At the end of each visit we set the interval together.

2 ×a year

For healthy teeth and gums. Combined with the six-monthly check-up, two visits a year are all you need.

3–4 ×a year

With periodontitis, implants, braces, diabetes, smoking or frequent caries. The interval is part of the treatment, not cosmetics.

1 ×before a procedure

Before implant placement, gum surgery or bleaching we clean thoroughly. A clean mouth heals better and bleaching works more evenly.

05
Your questions

Frequently asked questions about professional teeth cleaning.

Does teeth cleaning hurt?

With the GBT concept usually not. The AIRFLOW works with warm water and a very fine, water-soluble powder, not with scraping. Tartar is loosened with a low-pain ultrasonic instrument that adapts to sensitivity. Tell us beforehand about sensitive tooth necks and we adjust the device.

How long does a professional cleaning take?

Allow about 45 to 60 minutes. The time depends on how much plaque and tartar there is and whether implants, bridges or braces are cleaned as well.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

For most people two visits a year make sense. With periodontitis, implants, braces or a higher caries risk we recommend three to four visits. We set the interval together at the end of each visit.

Does my health insurer cover the costs?

Professional cleaning is not a statutory standard benefit, but most insurers pay a voluntary contribution, often between 40 and 100 euros per year, some even the whole treatment. You pay at the practice, submit the invoice to your insurer and get the contribution refunded. The table on this page shows which insurer pays how much.

What does professional teeth cleaning cost?

The price depends on the effort and is calculated under the German dental fee schedule (GOZ). We tell you the amount before the treatment so you can submit it to your insurer.

Is cleaning possible with implants, crowns or braces?

Yes, and that is exactly where it matters. The AIRFLOW method cleans implant surfaces, crown margins and around brackets without scratching them. For implants and gum pockets we use the PERIOFLOW attachment.

Will my teeth get whiter?

Stains from coffee, tea, red wine or nicotine are removed, so the teeth look brighter. The cleaning does not change the actual tooth shade; that is what bleaching is for.

Can I have a cleaning during pregnancy?

Yes, it is even recommended, because gums are more prone to inflammation during pregnancy. Many insurers pay pregnant women an additional contribution.
