Tooth decay damages the hard tissue of the tooth. If the defect is detected in time, the affected area can often be rebuilt directly with a tooth-coloured filling.
Modern composite materials make far more possible than simply “filling a hole”.
What is composite?
Dental composites consist of a resin matrix with a high proportion of filler particles.
They are available in a range of tooth shades and are bonded adhesively to the tooth structure.
The treatment
First, diseased tooth structure – or tooth structure that cannot be preserved – is removed.
The tooth is then prepared for adhesive bonding and the composite is placed in a carefully controlled way.
For aesthetically demanding restorations, different shades and translucencies can be used to mimic the natural build-up of a tooth.
Not every defect calls for a filling
The greater the loss of tooth structure, the more the mechanical demands on the tooth change.
For very extensive defects, a ceramic partial crown or crown can therefore be the more stable solution.
So we do not decide based solely on the size of the visible “hole”, but on the remaining tooth structure and the load it has to bear.

Remove as little healthy tooth structure as possible – and restore as much stability as necessary.
