What an implant-supported bridge really is.
Implants can serve as the abutments of a bridge, much like natural teeth. This replaces several missing teeth with a fixed restoration attached to strategically positioned implants.
The abutments
Two or more titanium implants, placed exactly where the bone supports them and the bridge needs them.
The framework
Connects the implants and carries the teeth. Screw-retained or cemented, with no removable part.

All-ceramic, colour-matched to your teeth. Three or four teeth on two abutments is typical.

How many implants? Planned backwards.
First we plan the future tooth position and the function you want. Then we determine where implants can sensibly be positioned. That way, surgery and restoration are matched to each other from the start.

The number and position of the implants depend on the size of the gap, the available bone, the position in the jaw, your bite and the planned restoration. More implants do not automatically mean a better result.
With the 3D X-ray we see bone height, bone width and the course of the nerve before we do anything. If bone is missing, we plan the graft in from the start.

The number depends on the gap, the bone and your bite, not on a catalogue. Sometimes two abutments are the better solution than four.
After a long time without teeth, bone is often missing. Then we rebuild it with a graft or choose a concept that uses the bone you have. We see this in the 3D X-ray beforehand.
Plaque collects under the bridge. Interdental brushes and check-ups are part of the deal, otherwise the tissue around the implants suffers.

How many implants do I need for a bridge?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. The number and position depend on the size of the gap, the available bone, the position in the jaw, your bite and the planned restoration. More implants do not automatically mean a better result. Often two implants support three to four teeth.
Why not simply a long conventional bridge?
With large gaps there are often no suitable natural abutment teeth. A conventional bridge would then not be possible, or would put unfavourable strain on the abutment teeth. Implants create additional anchorage without grinding down healthy teeth.
Is the bridge removable?
No. An implant-supported bridge is screwed or cemented onto the implants and stays fixed in the mouth. There are no clasps and no palatal bar.
How long does the treatment take?
Placing the implants takes one to two hours, depending on the number. They then heal in for two to four months, after which the bridge is made. In the meantime you wear a temporary restoration.
How do I care for an implant bridge?
Like your own teeth, plus interdental brushes or floss under the bridge. Add check-ups and professional cleaning every six months so that the tissue around the implants stays healthy.
What does an implant-supported bridge cost?
